Grey’s Anatomy: Why Nick Is Meredith’s Perfect Partner Explained By Showrunner

Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis has opened up about why Nick Marsh is Meredith Grey’s perfect partner, explaining how the show will continue portraying their relationship in the future. The latest episodes of the show continued to develop the pair’s relationship, something that had been continuing to evolve over the course of the last few seasons. By the end of Grey’s Anatomy season 20, the pair have bought a house together, proving the strength of their relationship with one another.

Speaking with Shondaland, Marinis explained why Nick is Meredith’s perfect partner, while also teasing how their relationship will evolve moving forward. The showrunner spoke about how he’s willing to say thing to her others keep bottled up, while also encouraging some of her wilder ideas because he believes in her. Check out what Marinis had to say about the couple below:

Meredith and Nick are going to go live together and be a family, but I also think she has opened up to letting him be part of her crazy ways and decision-making. It’s not that she’s going to stop making those crazy decisions, but he’s going to be a part of it, which I think could be really fun. Nick is so charming and a perfect match for Mer because he’s the first person she’s had a romantic relationship with to call her out on all the things that people have let slide in the past. [Andrew] DeLuca never did that with her, and when Derek challenged her, he was usually right. But now she’s being challenged in a way where sometimes she’s right and sometimes she’s not. And that’s messier. Nick is more of an equal to her than a lot of her past relationships since Derek.

I’m also really interested in exploring those two together not only as a couple but as two surgeons. Maybe they work on something together, potentially.

How Meredith & Nick’s Relationship Can Evolve In Grey’s Anatomy Season 21

Meredith made a shocking decision in the final episode of season 20, deciding to leak her Alzheimer’s research online and quitting her job at the Fox Foundation, all over Catherine’s head. This indicates how much tension there will be surrounding her decision in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, especially when those she was working directly with have time to process what she’s done. However, given the strong romance she now has with Nick, she’ll likely get an honest opinion from him that helps guide her next course of action.

The way their relationship evolves will likely coincide with whatever Meredith decides to do next now that she’s stepped down from her previous position. Given what Marinis wants to see happen, it’s possible that her and her husband could become surgeons together, working to save one or multiple lives together in a dramatic event. This could show how much they work well together beyond their home lives, and how both of them are dedicated to saving others. Such character moments would be a strong way to continue their stories in the upcoming episodes.

However, one of the biggest shake-ups in the series is going to be the number of Grey’s Anatomy doctors leaving Grey Sloan Memorial, something that will make season 21 one of the most unpredictable entries in the show’s history. While Meredith’s decision to quit doesn’t mean her story is over, it does indicate the next chapter of her life with Nick is going to be unpredictable. But, given how well the pair work together and their constant care for one another, they’ll likely continue to be a perfect pairing as the series continues.
