Was Billy Bob Thornton In A Secret Love Triangle With Angelina Jolie And Halle Berry?

Pretty much from the moment that Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton became a couple, it was known that their relationship affected someone else. The reason for that is Thornton reportedly left Laura Dern feeling heartbroken and alone after he left her to get involved with Jolie.

During Halle Berry’s career, it has never been a secret that millions of fans and some of her fellow stars have had a crush on her. On the other hand, very few people know that Berry once came between Jolie and Thornton’s relationship during their marriage.

Why Did Halle Berry Cause Problems In Angelina Jolie And Billy Bob Thornton’s Marriage?

After Billy Bob Thornton wrote, directed, and starred in the critically acclaimed movie Sling Blade, his career took off in a big way. That eventually led to him taking one of the lead roles in a mostly forgotten movie titled Pushing Tin.

When Pushing Tin was released, it completely flopped as it reportedly cost $33 million to make and brought in less than $8.5 million at the box office according to IMDb. Despite how badly Pushing Tin flopped, Thornton clearly was happy he made the movie at the time because of his love life.

During the filming of Pushing Tin, Thornton met Angelina Jolie for the first time and they fell for each other. The couple eventually tied the knot in the year 2000 and at the time they seemed to be completely smitten with each other.

The most infamous example of how passionate Jolie and Thornton seemed to be about each other was the necklaces they both wore. Both Thornton and Jolie wore vials on their necklaces that contained a small sample of each other’s blood.

Based on how they spoke about each other in the press at the time, many observers believed that Jolie and Thornton were immensely happy together. However, when Thornton spoke to The Sun in 2013, he revealed that it didn’t take too long for tensions to arise.

Roughly a year after Jolie and Thornton got married, he went to work on a movie called Monster’s Ball which co-starred Halle Berry. Based on what Thornton told The Sun, Berry wound up coming between him and Jolie through no fault of her own.

As Thornton explained to The Sun, being a professional actor can make being married difficult. The reason for that is actors like Thornton and Jolie have to travel to film sets in various locations which can make it impossible to spend much time with your spouse.

“If you are an actor, even doing a Disney movie or cartoon voices, you could still be away from each other for six months.”

As Thornton explained to The Sun, having to spend that much time apart from Jolie during their marriage became a big problem when he was working on Monster’s Ball. Even though Jolie has long been considered one of the most beautiful and lusted-after women in the world, Thornton working with Berry caused her to be jealous.

In the movie Monster’s Ball, Thornton and Berry’s characters appear in an intimate scene together that was long and left very little to the imagination. While speaking to The Sun, Thornton revealed that filming that sequence caused a lot of tension in his marriage to Jolie.

“She is one of the most beautiful women in the world and I am talking on the phone to my wife, and she says, ‘What have you been doing today?’ And I say, ‘Oh, I did that s*x scene with Halle Berry.’ You are then asked if you actually touch her. I say, ‘I had to – it’s in the scene'”

Thornton continued, “Other people’s situations are hard, with areas of doubt. But if you are a thousand miles from home on a film set simulating sex with a beautiful woman, it’s even tougher.”

Based on Thornton’s description of the situation, it is clear that there wasn’t a traditional love triangle. The reason for that is there is no indication that he wanted to be romantically involved with Berry or vice versa.

However, given that Jolie was upset that Thornton and Berry simulated intimacy, it could be argued that there was a love triangle of sorts. After all, two people in a relationship having a third party come between them seems like a pretty good way to define what a love triangle is.

Why Did Angelina Jolie And Billy Bob Thornton Get Divorced?

When couples break up, there often are three different versions of what led to the split. On top of each person having their own version of the events, there also is the truth which often is somewhere in the middle.

When it comes to Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie’s divorce, the two actors have very similar explanations for what led to their marriage ending. There is one notable and scandalous way that their explanations differ, however.

In 2018, Thornton appeared on the “HFPA in Conversation” podcast. During the resulting conversation, Thornton gave his take on what led to his marriage to Jolie ending.

“We just had different lifestyles. Hers is a global lifestyle and mine is an agoraphobic lifestyle. So that’s really, that’s the only reason we’re probably not still together, maybe. There was a different path in life we wanted to take.”

Years earlier in 2005, Angelina Jolie was profiled by Vanity Fair. When Jolie was interviewed by the publication, she also blamed her divorce from Thornton on the two of them growing apart.

“And so in a year I became who I am today, very much, and he became who he is today, and it was just totally different paths in life, and then we just looked at each other one day and we had nothing to say to each other.”

However, during a separate interview that Vanity Fair quoted for their piece, Jolie was asked about rumors that Thornton cheated on her. The gossip at the time claimed that Thornton cheated while he was on the road with his band. Asked about the rumors, Jolie once remarked, “I don’t think they are untrue.”
